Kamala Harris has made one of her first campaign stops in the town of Springfield.
The Vice President of the United States surprised The Simpsons fans with a pre-recorded video message on Saturday during the long-running Fox animated show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, after creator Matt Groening introduced the “superfan.”
“We must move forward, not backward, upward, not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom,” said Harris with a laugh, quoting the Oct. 27, 1996 episode ‘Treehouse of Horror VII’. The clip recently resurfaced after it was recorded by a group of University of Chicago students in 2013.
The episode aired during the ’96 presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, with aliens Kang and Kodos impersonating the candidates in a debate. The line was spoken by Kodos in disguise as Clinton.
The Simpsons has previously been credited with predicting the future, most recently after the 2000 episode ‘Bart to the Future’ showed Lisa Simpson becoming the first female president and sparking other comparisons to Harris.
The panel came as Harris traveled to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where her campaign said she hopes to raise more than $1.4 million. The campaign previously raised a record $81 million in its first 24 hours.
President Joe Biden previously endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination shortly after he dropped out of his race for re-election on Sunday.
Saturday’s panel teased upcoming episodes of The Simpsons, including the show’s 35th ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episode, which will air after Halloween.
